The United Kingdom is not just a country of rich traditions, but the true architect of the modern education system. People come here for the classical excellence of private boarding schools, to perfect their academic English and to earn prestigious degrees recognised anywhere in the world. Studying in the UK means choosing a quality that has been respected for centuries.
For school pupils. British private boarding schools are the gold standard of secondary education. Distinguished politicians, writers and scholars studied here. According to data from the Independent Schools Council (ISC), in 2025 private schools had 24,827 pupils whose parents live abroad (a further 36,513 non-British pupils were the children of residents). The overwhelming majority of international students choose full boarding (93%). UK schools have traditionally attracted the greatest interest from students from China (10,959 people), the Middle East and Europe.
For university students. British universities remain a magnet for international students. In the 2024/25 academic year, 685,565 international students were studying in the UK. Although this figure fell by 6.1% compared with the peak year of 2022/23 due to changes in immigration policy, the country's appeal remains enormous. The main «suppliers» of students are China and India, with recruitment from China beginning to grow again after a slight dip. The most popular choices among international students are master's programmes and research in business, law, engineering and artificial intelligence.
Secondary education. The system is structured with utmost clarity. Compulsory secondary education ends with GCSE exams at the age of 16. After that comes the path to university through obtaining A-level certificates (the British standard) or the International Baccalaureate, which is recognised worldwide. Boarding schools have an atmosphere of classical education: a strict dress code, residences with house parents, a rich sporting life and teaching in small classes. The academic year begins in September, and the UK has more than 500 private boarding schools scattered across the picturesque countryside
Preparatory programmes (Foundation). This is a bridge between school and university, ideal for international students whose 11 years of schooling do not match the British 13 years. The programme lasts a year and includes intensive study of English and core subjects (business, engineering, IT). Almost every major university has its own International College offering such programmes, with a guaranteed place in the first year upon successful completion. The cost of such a year of study, for example at Bournemouth University, is around £18 700 – £19 700.
Higher education. Studying in the UK is renowned for its intensity and compressed timeframes. A Bachelor's degree lasts only 3 years (except in Scotland), and a Master's just 1 year. This allows you to save significantly on living costs and start your career sooner. The Russell Group is the elite of British education, bringing together Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and other leading universities that top the global rankings.

To study in the United Kingdom on courses longer than 6 months, a student visa (Student Route Visa) is required.
Main requirements: Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed educational institution. Proof of English language proficiency (SELT). Proof of funds (money to cover tuition and a minimum of £1 171/month for living costs outside London).
IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge): A mandatory contribution of £776 per year for access to the UK's NHS healthcare system (paid together with the visa for the full duration of study).
Visa timing and cost: You can apply up to 6 months before the start of your course. The visa price is around £524 plus the IHS payment.
